The IV

Producer’s View & The Juug Playlist.

The producers share their thoughts on Exposed and we will share the music that inspired Shazir Sutton’s character.

We are four days from principal photography and we thought it would be a good time to share our thoughts on the project including why this story is so important to us, how we feel about the character dynamics, as well as, share some fun facts.

What drew you to this story?

Tobi: If I am being completely honest it was the combination of black culture and LGBTQ characters. I was intrigued with how the characters were written; outside the Hollywood cookie-cutter norm. This played a huge factor in the driving force that drew me to the story. I am a writer before a producer so I really resonated with the story on a personal level.

Alex: I worked on Exposure as a Key MUA and had one of the most eye-opening experiences ever. It was my first set where the majority of the crew were black and the vibes were so immaculate that I reached out to Jewel during the tour to live to stream it for him. We talked and I told him that although I was an MUA I really wanted to establish myself in a different position and he took the chance with me and I helped executive produce the second part of this trilogy ZIR. It’s really crazy how things work out because what I didn’t know was how much Jewel and I needed each other for that project. We would spend hours in his apartment creating this world deeper than what we could have ever imagined. That whole development process just locked me in entirely to this series and I am so thankful for the personal relationship I have with Jewel and this story.

Sarah: My closest friends are a part of the LGBT community and I enjoy being able to support, grow, and learn along with them. So I wanted to support and stand in solidarity with them and help bring a different and unique perspective to life.

Did you put yourself in any of the characters or identify with them?

Tobi: Yes, I could definitely connect to Levi’s tenacity to hustle, because I too love cash, hahaha.

Alex: Definitely Alicia specifically because of her spirituality and earthy vibe. She’s a new character addition that I think speaks to a certain crowd of black women. She gives soulful vibes and I’m excited to see how the audience takes to her.

Sarah: I resonate with the women of the world. We have the earthy soulful vibes of Alicia who wears her heart on her sleeve with the bold and powerful ride-or-die, friend, Chelsea. The two of them balance the male dynamic of the episodic.

Where do you hope this story goes?

Tobi: I definitely hope we go on tour. Honestly if I am being super positive I would love this short to capture the attention of Harpo Production and get produced by them, Oprah please give me a job.

Alex: I see this story going to a lot of places, especially within the SCAD community. I would love to see this picked up on a streaming platform for viewing if the market allows it.

Sarah: In the simplest of terms everywhere, but if I had to be more specific I would say the World of Exposure including Zir and Exposed: The Series would fit nicely on HOORAE.

What do you hope ppl get from this story?

Tobi: My answer is going to be something outta pocket like sometimes:  doing the wrong thing yields good results. I mean Marcus did his man so dirty by submitting those pictures …however he did win.

Alex: There’s always been this talk of what it means to be LGBTQ+ and black. I hope this enlightens people that identifying who you are is important but also respecting those who need time to get comfortable with their identity is equally as important.

Sarah: I want people to feel more open and honest after watching this proof and know that it is ok to speak and live your truth, whatever that means for them.

Which character would you say you are most like and why?

Tobi: I really want to say Alicia because I vibe with her playlist however she stays getting played and I’ve never been played in my life so I have to go with Chelsea

Alex:  I feel I’m in close connection with Chelsea in the series especially when it comes to how she rides for her people. She’s the hype and fun friend and she’s funny. I would say I’m all of those things as well lol.

Sarah: I think I identify with Levi the most because he has a tough exterior but is softer on the inside, especially around those that he trusts.

What was the most challenging and most rewarding part of Exposed?

Tobi: Location scouting, that whole process is super tedious and can be such a headache but once a location is locked it feels like the story becomes more concrete. Shout out to Alexis Bloom for heading up locations, God bless that woman.

Alex:  I think the most challenging part of all of this has just been the sacrifices we’ve all made to be a part of this project. We all have invested months of our time and have committed to meeting twice a week just to hold ourselves accountable for producing this project. The most rewarding part for me is seeing the pieces fall together and those loving moments the team shares in our meetings. I couldn’t ask for a better team to work with. Everyone has each other’s backs and that feeling is irreplaceable.

Sarah: I would say the most challenging part has been finding the right locations for each scene that will match the aesthetic of our vision. It’s important for us to show Savannah, Georgia as a character in this world and how the characters live and breathe within the space.

Favorite line or scene from the script?

Tobi:  “What does he have on?” | Chelsea

Alex: What you doing for the rest of the night?” | Alicia

Sarah: “Now what’s with the lack of enthusiasm?” | Von

The Juug Playlist

As we reach production, we want to provide more of a look into the characters that help create the World of Exposure. Shazir Sutton (played by Todras Sam) is a half-brother to Levi Sutton and is in the drug game with their Uncle Von. He does not like the idea of getting deeper into the drug game because of his mother’s overdose, but reluctantly agrees. He is a hustler who still cares deeply about his family and those closest to him.

“A soul survivor dealing with his own troubles.” ~Todras Sam

With production right around the corner for IV Vision's seventh project, Exposed: The Series, it only felt right to not only see the vision when creating this piece but also envision how it will sound. While writing and preparing this project, I kept track of what music I took in and how it influenced the mood/tone of the setting/local, conflict, characters, and their story arcs. Bringing it to the attention of my fellow producers made us decide to share multiple character-based playlists we will curate weekly, leading into the project's production. We hope you capture a glimpse of the sounds and elements that embody the characters of the Exposure world and get a taste of what you could hear within the project's soundtrack.

~Jewel IV, Creator/Director of Exposed: The Series

ZiR’s Juug Playlist

“Juug” was the dart word that Jewel gave for our first principal character playlist. The stand term which means the aggressive act of making a profit with finesse regardless of the consequences and obstacles captures the character arc that Shazir Sutton battles within Exposed: The Series. We first meet Shazir Sutton (previously played by Lorenzo Brown III, now by Todras Sam) in IV Vision’s second addition to the Exposure Trilogy, ZIR. In the film, we drop back in time to see the reconnection with his distant father, Zion, in a pivotal moment within Shazir’s childhood that molds his actions in his adulthood showcased in the series. Throughout the series, we will dive deeper into Shazir’s past, uncovering the reasoning for his choices and actions within the present day. Zir will ultimately learn that not all skinfolk are kinfolk. Formulated from the best hits of 2010’s Hip-Hop and Rap, this playlist features artists that bring new age grit and ruggedness to the Exposure world, such as MoneybaggYo, Lil Baby, Future, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil-Wayne, Kevin Gates, Migos, NBA YoungBoy, 21 Savage, Rod Wave and more.

Who is Alicia Hill?

Today we focus on Alicia Hill and the music that inspired her character.

As we reach production, we want to provide more of a look into the characters that help create the World of Exposure. Alicia Hill (played by Melissa Mitchem) is the supporting role and lover of Levi Sutton. She is a Savannah local, born and raised. She is a down-to-earth, sensual, sultry, highly educated neo-soul kind of woman. She is romantically involved with Levi and wants to take their “relationship” to the next level, but is unaware of Levi’s secret and has to come to the realization of his double life.

“For Alicia, I’ve been thinking about her level of knowledge of what’s really going on with Levi, does she have a clue or is she just noticing a shift? She cares for him so I think she knows something is up with him but she is hoping he comes to her himself.” -Melissa Mitchem

We decided to split her playlist into two, Side A and Side B. Side A reflects her outward appearance that she shows the world with more old-school R&B/neo-soul vibes while Side B contrasts and focuses on her inward self that she doesn’t show many people with more of a new school Alt R&B flare. Today we give you Side A, but be on the lookout for Side B!

With production right around the corner for IV Vision's seventh project, Exposed: The Series, it only felt right to not only see the vision when creating this piece but also envision how it will sound. Who is Alicia Hill?

Alicia Hill in Exposed: The Series (played by Melissa Mitchem) represents our soulful and down-to-earth ones in our world. Created by Jewel and fellow producer Alexis Broome, they aimed to bring attention to a character that embodies the mind, boy, and soul. The Exposed team tapped into music that incorporated rooted sounds and beats that captured listeners into the story. The Savannah local is a sultry and sensual one. She has new-age ambition with an old soul. Although Miss Hill is a supporting character within the series, she plays a vital role in Marcus and Levi’s relationship. Formulated around 90’s Neo-Soul and R&B, this playlist features artists that embody the undertone soul and vibe of the Exposure world, such as Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Mary J. Von’s OG Playlist & Location Scout.

Today we focus on the music that inspires Von Williams’s character, as well as, share updates on our previous location scout.

Levi and Shazir outside the gas station in Exposure.

Continuing on our journey for Black Music Month our next character we’d like to highlight Von Williams (played by Carlos “Raxiel” Liz). As the antagonist of the story, he helped raise Shazir once his mother passed and is Savannah’s biggest drug lord. We thought it fitting to name his playlist after the old-school playa that he is, The OG playlist.

Jewel IV, Creator/Director of Exposed: The Series

Von Williams in Exposed: The Series (played by Raxiel Carlos Liz) channels the heart of the dirty south. Jewel wanted to bring a blend of that core element to audiences by paying homage to the Southern region of the United States. Von’s journey begins in the mid-late ’90s, way before Marcus and Levi are even thought of in this world. He is the best friend and business partner of Zion Sutton (played by Jarron Webster), Shazir, and Levi’s father. After Zion’s tragic death, Von takes his boys under his wing, teaches them the heartbeat of the streets, and paves their way to hold the crown of the drug operations he and their father have established in the low country. Through time and tribulations, greed and guilt mold Von to be the respectable manipulative boss in the series. Formulated around original southern hip-hop artists from New Orleans, Miami, Memphis, Houston, Savannah, and the infamous ATL. This playlist features artists that embody the grittiness of the world of Exposure, such as UGK, Crime Mob, Three 6 Mafia, Outkast, T.I, Goodie Mob, Slim Thug, and Dj Screw, Lil Wayne, and many more.

Brandon’s Pretty Boy Playlist.

Today we focus on the music that inspires Brandon Foster’s character.

As we were planning out the playlist for our upcoming production, we thought what if we took it a bit further and made a playlist for each character so we did. Brandon Foster (played by Aaron Michael Tyler) is the fun-loving friend to Chelsea and Marcus. He is THE pretty boy.

~Jewel IV, Creator/Director of Exposed: The Series

Brandon Foster in Exposed: The Series (played by Aaron Michael Tyler) embodies the definition of a "pretty boy." Created by Jewel IV, the 305 native gives the Exposure World a concentrated dosage of the hot boy lifestyle we all have tapped into or are currently pursuing. However, his character's presence brings a different layer from what his best friend, Marcus Carter, showcases as another layer of black gay men within the world. An unapologetically carefree mindset filled with flamboyant energy, confidence, and self-empowerment, sparkling with black boy joy. Formulated around the current female wave of Southern-based and mainstream Hip-Hop/R&B, this playlist features artists that encapsulate just that, such as the City Girls, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and more.

Black Music Month is NOT Over.

We are closing out Pride Month with a special interview with Jewel IV as well as introducing the creative teams' playlist inspired by Exposed: The Series.

The one and only Jewel Hamrick IV, Writer, Executive Producer, Director, and Founder of IV Vision Corp. He identifies as gay and uses he/him, they/them pronouns.

Jewel always felt like everyone had their assumptions, but were waiting for him to be comfortable sharing his sexuality. When he was 18 at a college retreat his parents found his makeup bag and well the rest is history. His sexuality created some strain with some of his family members. Born and raised in Houston, TX, Jewel is truly a visionary creating the worlds in his mind and bringing them to life.

He gears his creative process based on what each project needs. Jewel’s focus is to create content that reflects queer life and shows it authentically. For the past 3 years, he has been creating the world of Exposure, the longest era for the company to date. Jewel is grateful for his creative team over four departments and appreciates all of their hard work. “The projects at Vision give them an outlet to stay true to what they love, to have an executive say in a piece of art, and to keep their portfolio up to date and fresh. I can't do it without them.” Aside from running IV Vision, he works freelance across the coasts while completing his MFA by the end of this year.

If you ask him what change he would like to see in the LGBTQ+ community he’ll say, “ I want to see more acceptance of individuality. I know that kind of sounds backward, but I am serious. The gay community, specifically the black gay community can be so judgemental of one another. Either you're too fem, too masc, too fat, too thin, blahh blahh nahting! Be who you are and live in YOUR truth, not for the clout.”

Despite the adversity he may face, Jewel has learned to rise above any negative situation by either stepping away and removing himself or by holding his tongue. Regardless of his views on the situation or if he disagrees he still treats everyone with respect even if they don’t treat him the same.

Our Music Picks!

We understand that Black Music Month was in June, but we want to extend the celebration and uplift some of our favorite artists and musicians. Empowerment & Liberation.

We continue the Pride Celebration with significant roles within Exposed along with launching our Crowdfunding Perks!

Shakeem Cota, he/him, Bisexual. He is no stranger to the World of Exposure. He is reviving his role as Marcus Carter in the highly anticipated Exposed: The Series.

A proud South Floridian, he gravitated towards art early in life and found that he enjoyed “stretching the rules and finding the shared art of spontaneity in collaborations.” He values being an entrepreneur and that he can use his artistry to work in different mediums like marketing and special publications.

Shakeem has found that his coming out process is an evolving cycle where he continues to transform and discover new ways to embody himself. He practices a daily reflection of his self-acceptance within the art he creates to determine where and how to share it with the world and his community.

He takes every opportunity as a chance to empower and liberate himself and others. When Shakeem reflects on the changes he wants to see within the LGBTQIA+ community he calls to action for everyone to “stay human” and be compassionate to one another with everything that is taking place in our world and that this compassion “will always keep the party going.”

You can find him @shakeemcota on all social platforms.

Happy Father’s Day & Juneteenth!

We here at IV Vision want to celebrate all the Fathers out there and share the inspiration for our upcoming project Zir.

After spending the day with his estranged father, Z comes homes and faces the harsh reality of his childhood. At its core, Zir is a father and son.

Zir was executive produced by Jewel’s parents, Owennetta & Jewel Hamrick III. This film is a sequel to the world of Exposure and focuses on the community of Savannah through an 8-year-old lens.

Growing up, Jewel admits he didn’t have the strongest relationship with his father, yet producing Zir was his way to strengthen and share a story that highlights an unbroken bond. “I seek to capture the intimacy of the bond a black father and son can have regardless of the circumstances.”

Again we want to say Father’s Day & Juneteenth. We hope it’s a special day.

Highlighting the Underrepresented Stories.

Meet two vital roles that create and shape Exposed: The Series and how their Pride molds them.

First up is Elizabeth Fogner, she/he, Non-Binary, Trans, and Queer writer for Exposed: The Series.

First up is Elizabeth Fogner, she/he, Non-Binary, Trans, and Queer writer for Exposed: The Series

She wanted to take her time to come out and was careful who she shared her sexuality with. At the age of 16, she was publicly outed but instead of denying her sexuality, she decided to own it.

For Elizabeth, she uses androgyny to help others discover their own identities. She pulls inspiration from creator, Ryan Murphy, because of the way he represents the underrepresented LGBTQ+ community.

When asked how she combats hate with love, she immediately encourages her community, “Never limit yourself. Experiment with feelings and what feels right. Labels can help find yourself or limit you, so do what feels right.”

Aaron Michael Tyler, he/him, Gay, and plays Brandon Foster for Exposed: The Series.

Born and raised in Petersburg, Virginia “(TWO UP, TWO DOWN!!! 804 STAND UP!!!)” from a young age he knew that he was different from the other boys. Throughout the years he has slowly come out to his family and friends, who have been supportive all the way.

He realized that art was his safe haven to create stories about underrepresented groups through the stage and screen. In 2020, he had a one-act play virtually produced, Boys Like Us, through SPARC’S New Voices. It is important to him that he plays roles that humanize and validates Black Queer characters.

In society, being vulnerable is frowned upon and damages someone’s self-perception. Aaron lives authentically and celebrates his pride by “actively working against that toxic narrative.” He is excited and eager to bring the world of Exposed to life to help highlight the beauty of the LGBTQ+ community.

It’s Pride Month, Baby!

With June being Pride Month we feel it is essential to highlight Exposed: The Series and how it is a part of the LGBTQ+ conversation.

Exposed is a story revolving around the black queer community. Our director, Jewel, has felt compelled for years to tell this story. With every story he watched, his passion and excitement grew.

Currently, Jewel’s inspiration comes from CW’s Tom Swift and how he is an unapologetic character against all odds, trials, and personal disagreements with his father figure. Throughout the world of Exposure, Zir showcases the bond between father and son with an intimate and empowering look.

We are coming to an age where queer protagonists are becoming the new norm. Our goal with Exposed is to show, the “black queer protagonist and the importance of it because of the lack of it.” With this as our mission, starting next week we will be highlighting our LGBTQ+ cast and crew members as part of our Pride Month Campaign.
