Exposed: Back To Black is an episodic proof continuing the world of Exposure. In this installment, photographer Marcus Carter must navigate the consequences of potentially outing his lover Levi. Meanwhile, Levi's brother Shazir meets with Von to discuss a new underground business venture.

The film is directed by Jewel Hamrick IV (Jewel IV), who also serves as one of the producers alongside Alexis Broome, Sarah McVicker, Tobi Oladipo, and Kareem McMichael. The cinematography is helmed by Kai Dickson, and the cast features the talents of Shakeem Cota, Khalil Harmon, Amari K. Jones, Todras Sam, Raxiel Liz, Melissa Mitchem, and Quentin Murrell.

"Exposed holds such a special place, not just in my profession, but in my heart," said Jewel IV. "I am very proud that even through an uneasy time in our industry, we are being seen and recognized for our strides to continue to bring stories like Exposed, to the screen. Thank you to all of our team, talent, and crew members that invested time, money and sweat to make this vision happen. My first film, Bash, was the first film that I screened in my hometown of Houston, TX. It feels very full circle to be coming back 7 years later to screen my most complex piece to date; It's nostalgic."

The National Black Film Festival was founded with the initiative to build an enlightening platform for future filmmakers and actors, aiming to stimulate the production of more high-quality films in the Houston, Texas metropolitan area and map the city as a major cinematic outlet.

We invite all our supporters, film enthusiasts, and the Houston community to join us in celebrating this achievement and supporting the creative voices that continue to shape the film industry.

The Evolution of Vision & The Prelude to Era IV

Jewel IV for Era IV. Photography by Emerald Arguelles

Everyone seems to be in an era, whether that be their enlightenment era, villain era, or soft era, but for Jewel IV; this is his “Era IV.” The importance of this era is more than simply a transition to music and to not shy away from the creative avenues of film, rather re-envision them.

At his core Jewel IV is a filmmaker, but in this era he has taken a momentary hiatus from the director’s chair to venture into a new creative medium. With a relocation across the country came various effects, such as lack of creative inspirations, the breaking of ties, and the immense urge to create something new. Music is an inventive, divine, and therapeutic exploration for Jewel. He wrote his first song in high school where he adapted a poem into a song and recording on GarageBand. The song, which Jewel teases will never see the light of day, was personal to him during that moment in his life. The exploration of this creative venture fostered a new division in the making, but in order to understand the present; the past must be explored. IV Sound, now the official music division of IV Vision Co., came into development in late 2022; where Jewel co-created the soundtrack for his seventh project Exposed: Back To Black,” thus officially birthing the division. Naturally the music progression has led Jewel to focus on the craft for himself, “It is more connected to my pen on a personal level than my pen is on a film,” he says. On a film, Jewel thinks more about the audience's reception and character motivations for the sound. However, for his upcoming EP, he unapologetically and unrestrictedly puts himself first.

“This shift in medium ultimately planted a seed for a new vision that is now peaking on the horizon.”
— Jewel IV

Jewel IV, the pure and simmering Sagittarius, credits many inspirations for this upcoming era of his life and his company, IV Vision. Firstly, his parents have influenced his creativity and the way he does business. Following his parents as a guiding light and relying on them as they helped to develop his music taste while growing up in Houston. Much of his musical seasoning comes from early R&B genre. An album he still listens to ‘religiously’ to this day is Jill Scott's The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3. Jewel laments that her album “needs to be studied in music class. It's the flow of poetry, the seamlessness of how it correlates the music and the lyrics and the atmosphere and the tone that she's creating for not just her, but the audience, is immense.”

His parents expressed apprehension with the transition to music, but understood that it is an addition to the film world and skillset as well. Jewel has expressed his nervousness to enter a new creative medium and is just now becoming more public about it.

“I have not been as transparent with this expression of medium as I have with my filmmaking with my immediate family. I am a bit nervous for them to see this other layer to my artistry. The only ones that know are close friends and Vision staff; thats it.”
— Jewel IV

VISIONS CAME LIKE BUBBLES

He’s lived in Los Angeles for about a year now, exploring what it means being truly single and seeking clarity in a new city. He has used music as a coping mechanism for the various emotions he has felt with this new season of his life. Jewel says, “I have never experienced regret or heightened anxiety before. It’s all very new and it’s something I take day by day.” To release this anxiety and keep himself busy he collaborated with other artists such as Soul Sydonna and his cousin, Christiana. He would write and record rough demos on his phone to send to ATL for Soul and go to studio sessions with his cousin to take more artistic risks and flex his pen. The result is a project that explores Jewel’s personal life, professional, and creative passions through auditory storytelling.

SUGAR … SPICE … AND EVERYTHING NICE.

Jewel IV for Era IV. Photography by Emerald Arguelles

This EP spawned as an earlier concept for his album, “Phases.” The album, from what he has shared, took 6-7 months to write/demo and has been sitting since October 2023. Jewel mentions that when he still felt the urge to continue to write and create after completing the “Phases” demos. He also felt that it would be premature to release an entire LP with no lead in. While continuing to make new music, he decided to deconstruct the album into three individual EPs to encompass a complete project called “The Ludes.” The triptych stems from time in relation to music storytelling. It also takes inspiration from the well-known animated series “The PowerPuff Girls" where the phrase, “Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice” is incorporated into each EP.

For “Prelude” the motif stems from the “sugar” or Bubbles. With this being the first EP in his catalog naturally the theme of this project is an introduction and start to his bubbling artistry. The project to follow, “Interlude” pulls from Buttercup, the spice or rather the main event and “Postlude” from Blossom with everything nice to complete the Ludes trilogy.

Though the whole LP will be released at some point he didn’t feel it was the right timing and instead wanted to focus on creating a project that showcases and introduces him as an artist.

Jewel IV for Era IV. Photography by Emerald Arguelles

For the upcoming EP, “Prelude”, Jewel has stuck to his origins of R&B while diving into other subgenres such as alternative R&B. He looks up to the multitalented independent artist Tinashe and takes inspiration from her lyricism and all around artistic development. He even shouts her out in his song “Say So.” He is also fascinated with the darker hip hop tones; similar to Beyonce's “6 INCH'“ and “ALL UP IN YOUR MIND”. He enjoys studying demos and unreleased tracks by said artists to focus on the their artistic evolution.

“There are a lot of artists I can relate and connect with through their art, but Tinashe is one that was right with me in that moment and translates exactly what I would say, feel, and how I would react…sonically. She is ahead of the industry in my opinion.”
— Jewel IV

As Jewel and IV Vision Enter this new era, it is apparent that he is open and eager to learn, absorb, and grow. The main difference with “Era IV," coined by the company entering its fourth year of business along with Jewel as the fourth generation, he states, “it’s very public.” Normally the company likes to surprise their audience and drop exclusive content but this approach is two parts a celebration and an opportunity to be more open and honest with their audience. "We will be doing 4 major drops this year. 2 visual projects, and 2 audio projects. All different mediums and formats that we have been experimenting with for the last 2-3 years up till now." Jewel states. A few notable mentions that are expected for the company on a visual side is the documentary for the making of “Exposed" and the highly anticipated episodic proof Exposed: Back To Black.” The company will be going further in the audio space with an upcoming podcast collaboration with Starring Entertainment.

This era is all about exploring new ideas and trying new things. It gives the company an opportunity to do things, “we've never had the chance to do, but now we do,” Jewel says. During this era, he plans to wear many creative hats and flow between a musician, filmmaker, and a creative director with a focus on tapping into himself and collaborating with others. Jewel says that “new strategies are always being developed for the releases of our projects, so who knows what else is to come from this era. It’s full of surprises.” While Jewel has many inspirations he, maybe unknowingly, is an inspiration and motivation to others in his mission to give back and fuel other creatives through these collaborations.

“I love putting other creatives on, highlighting other creatives, and giving them a platform to showcase their work in their art.”
— Jewel IV

The ‘hue’ of Era IV is not a single color but rather a focus on the primary colors: blue, green, and red, a separation from the neutrals of brown, black, and white seen in the “World of Exposure.” In Vision’s catalog every film is associated with a color. Every color has a deeper meaning that symbolizes each film whether through similar hues or saturations it sets the tone of the creative work. For “Exposure,” the tone was “warmth mixed with grit,” but when selecting the color for Prelude Jewel says, “I was looking, digging deeper inside of myself, and I realized there was no color. It was new; it was clear.”

“Prelude” embodies themes and motifs that rely heavily on the fun that is Bubbles’ childlike wonder. Incorporated into this is the use of the color blue, big fluffy clouds, and mirrors. The concept of mirrors plays on the idea of refraction and the breaking of light; which translates throughout the EP with the use of up tempo beats and sweet yet sassy lyrics. Each song on the EP represents a different color; “Say So,” a warm red and “Jaded,” a deep green. The range of colors shows his openness and intention to the sound and care each song deserves. Era IV provides a sense of vibrancy that shows through Jewel’s artist development.

However, for his upcoming EP, “Prelude,” he reflects on his journey so far unapologetically and unrestrictedly putting himself first.

Jewel IV for Era IV. Photography by Emerald Arguelles

“Music, to me, is laying out how I feel or what I want to say on the track without judgement or a stamp of approval.’”
— Jewel IV

He has different stories he wants to tell as an outlet and knows that it will reach whoever it was meant to reach. Jewel explains the process has been the funnest part. The creation of his songs either start with the lyrics first or the beat which he sometimes finds off of YouTube. A great example is with his song “Jaded” which resembles a letter to himself of self reflection and regret.

Space and time, did it right.

Was on my mind, but for a night

These precious stones, they holdin’ tight

Just a reminder, that I’m gone be alright

Jewel not only uses ‘type beats’ as a way to exercise his songwriting skills, but to see if the song is demo worthy. All the heart and hard work is a part of the exploration of this new era; without the need for financial gain or influence. Jewel proudly states, “I’m doing this because I want to,” as a way to stay true to himself and his brand.

Jewel IV for Era IV. Photography by Emerald Arguelles

“The Ludes will be a layered expression of where my head (creatively, mentally, intimately) has been since the exposure era. It’s a reflection of self. An expression of self. A reminder of worth that we carry in all aspects of ourselves.”
— Jewel IV

As for Vision, the company will grow and evolve stronger focusing on the values of quality work, paying attention to detail, and being authentic to the craft. For Jewel, IV Vision is a legacy for me, it’s not just the company.” Jewel has many aspirations and goals for this era, but the biggest one is to “release everything on time,” he says jokingly. With all the exciting releases this coming forth this era, Jewel is most excited about the music. When asked what his top three songs on the upcoming EP are, he says people might really like “Jaded, Hush, and Like U Do. It’s hard for me to choose. I resonate with them so differently. I love them all.” Although the actual release date is unknown (even to Vision staff), Jewel says to expect “something” by the summertime.

Let the Festival Circuit Begin!

We are excited to announce our first Laurel for our pilot proof, Exposed: Black to Black, and what this festival circuit has in store.

We are headed to Chicago for the Black Alphabet Film Festival (BAFF) this fall. BAFF is Chicago’s first Black LGBTQ+ film festival and since its inception in 2013, they have dedicated its mission to serving the community through storytelling and education.

Exposed: The Series was accepted into the web-series programming for this year's festival and we are humbled to share in cultivating conversation within the Black LGBTQ+ community.

This is just the beginning of our festival circuit and we are anxiously awaiting the results from more submissions domestically and internationally.

Please Pardon Our Hiatus…

February came and went! We didn’t mean to leave you hanging, but now we can fill you in on what we have been up to for the past month. Plus we will highlight some amazing women in honor of Women's Month.

TV Festival

During the month of February, our alma mater invited the IV Team to represent SCAD as Ambassadors at the TV Festival in Atlanta. We attended several panels throughout the weekend. We learned so much from industry leaders, networked and made new connections, as well as, caught up with fellow friends and classmates. We attended a special screening of Harlem where we met and heard inspiring stories from the cast and creator.

As part of our Ambassadorship came the opportunity to pitch Exposed to a group of executives in exchange for feedback. We were one of six projects selected that were given ten minutes total to pitch including the executives’ feedback. We went second and needless to say we were a bit nervous yet our excitement for the opportunity weighed more. After our short and sweet pitch we had a conversation with the executives on how to improve our pitch moving forward and it was certainly invaluable information. After the pitch party we celebrated with a southern brunch in the historic midtown.

The Pitch Party really fueled our next steps for Exposed and the world of IV Vision.

Writer’s Room

We have been working hard to get Exposed to a point where the story is completely outlined and we can finish writing the series. We recently added two beautiful black queer writers, Desmond Lane and Damone Williams to our team to help the series flourish.

We have had a blast getting to know and working with these writers as we expand the world of Exposed and what Vision has to offer.

The Writers:

JEWEL IV - CREATOR/SHOWRUNNER

SARAH M. - SUPERVISING PRODUCER

ALEXIS B. - STORY PRODUCER

TOBI O. - STORY EDITOR

JORDAN Y. - STAFF WRITER

NATHAN C. - STAFF WRITER

JORDAN P. - STAFF WRITER

DESMOND L. - STAFF WRITER

DAMONE W. - STAFF WRITER

Women's Month

Although we missed an opportunity to post about Black History Month we wanted to make it a point to celebrate Women's Month. Fun Fact: IV Vision is made up of about 80% women and so we wanted to highlight some of the creative women on the team, who also happen to be beautifully black, and share their views on being a woman in the industry.

These women understand that in the world and in their field they are navigating through male-dominated areas. Despite that, they continue to focus on what is most important, the art of storytelling.

Happy New Year from IV Vision!

We are starting 2023 off with the addition of new visions and plans for our recent projects.

This year we are dedicated to expanding the world of Exposed by reaching audiences with a festival circuit and creating compelling storylines for future episodes. We understand that many have been anticipating the release of Zir but unfortunately due to some delays the release date has been pushed back. We are currently submitting Exposed to various festivals across the globe and wanted to surprise everyone with a trailer for our Exposed BTS Short Docuseries. Click here to view.

Looking for Writers

With every new year comes an opportunity for growth and IV Vision is looking to recruit black queer writers for our 2023 Exposed Writers’ Room. Some of our goals for this year are to fully develop the first season while creating subsequent seasons in preparation to pitch the series to networks and studios. Please submit your writing samples to ivviznroom@gmail.com by Tuesday, January 10.

Surprise, We Made an Album!

We are happy to finally announce a secret project that has been in the works for quite some time.

The front cover.

Exposed: The Series wouldn’t feel right without the addition of a soundtrack to correlate and expand the world even further. So we would like to introduce to all of you… BK2BLK. This is a compilation album featuring some up-and-coming artists as well as some of our very own including Raxiel El Leon who plays Von, and Q From Tha Block who plays Kleem.

Just a little backstory, this project has been discussed since Vision’s film 569 film but with anything great it takes time. With Exposed it was important to encapsulate all the previous films in the series and prepare the viewers for what is to come. We used our music campaign and character-curated playlists as a sample of what the album would sound like which inspired the addition of IV Sound, a new branch of IV Vision where Jewel, Sarah McVicker, and Syd Wade executive produced Vol. 1 of the album.

When curating the album we hand-selected musicians who fit the mold of what the series represented while having a variety of sounds. The flow of the album was another vital aspect as we wanted our listeners to groove along with us and follow along with the drama of the album as it relates to Exposed. We start off mellow then burst into a crescendo, bring the high back down, and round out the mellow R&B sound, creating a full-circle effect.

We reached out to a close friend and fellow artist, Kaylan Mary, to bless the album with a single that would transcend and elevate BK2BLK and Exposed to new heights. There’s no other way to put it So Good is just that good. Her single dropped last Friday, so check it out on Apple and Spotify. Sarah executive produced along with Jewel who also directed the music video for the song. We were inspired by the Black Renaissance and the idea of a muse as a way to connect the song to the series. The visual is currently in post and will drop soon.

Taylor Gray is a close friend who Jewel has known for years and his pop-sultry sound from a queer perspective was a great addition. OC Dinero begins to heighten the album with a groovy and upbeat hip-hop track but still keeps the mellow undertones. Along with R&B artist CristalC, we put a BK2BLK spin and remix on it while keeping the original vibe of the song intact.

Tripppy, a fellow SCAD alum, precedes the interlude and slows down the latter half of the album. A special element that brings the album full circle, aside from the interlude and outerlude, is the start with Arttemis and finish with Soul Sydonna with features the album’s sound mixer, Syd.

Honestly working on it was an unforgettable experience because we have been discussing making an original collaborative album for years. To be able to bring our ideas to life with the help of really talented artists has been a blessing and surreal. I am so proud of everyone involved and can’t wait until we come back together to create more artwork.

Syd Wade from SoulSydonna & Arttemis

We want to thank all the artists for their hard work on this project and last but certainly not least we want to give a special shoutout to Syd who mixed and mastered the album to perfection. We are immensely grateful and can’t wait to make more magic happen.

The album, BK2BLK, is available on all platforms now!

Picture Locked.

We have officially locked our thesis film, Exposed. So what’s next?

Our post-production has been running smoothly and after critiques from the committee and the IV Vision team last Wednesday fellow SCAD alum and our editor, Jayda Cardoza, finalized and transferred the picture to our sound designer, Manni Simon. The picture went under several revisions until it was in tip-top shape before moving forward with color and sound.

Once we were done filming, Jayda took the footage and got straight to work. She and Jewel stayed up late all night discussing the edits over zoom and facetime during the course of the five weeks. Jewel took a trip to Los Angeles to review the working cut and make some final changes before transferring the footage.

So what’s next? Sound and color have roughly a month to shape the dialogue, sound effects, and music while coloring the picture to match the mood and tone of the final look. After that, the complete and final picture will be displayed at SCAD’s MFA Thesis Showcase at the end of the quarter in November before it hits the festival circuit.

That’s a Wrap!!!

We are officially done with principal photography and heading to post! We will take you through the last few days as well as conclude our music playlist campaign with Marcus’ playlist.

Principal Photography.

We concluded our principal photography last Sunday. It was so much fun to see the actors bring the characters alongside our director of photography, Kai Dickson, who was new to the World of Exposure. We used Beyoncé’s Renaissance and special character playlists to prepare us for each day and shot.

However, like other productions, we were not short of our challenges. The major thing that changed everything for us was the weather. We planned on shooting an exterior scene that would showcase the beauty of Savannah, but there were incoming storms on their way to the area. This prompted and initiated Plan Z which included a script revision the night before.

We gathered all our department heads together so they could collaborate on the new plan. We already had Shazir’s location, so we decided to reconstruct the scene using our resources. Throughout the shoot, we used the rain to our advantage and made it a character in the world. What we created gives a more intimate but light-hearted and fun look at the characters and their views on the world around them.

Despite Murphy’s Law working hard we worked harder and were able to finish principal photography with a story that still provides the essence of the World of Exposure. As we move into post-production the story will take another shape and form. As a personal note to everyone who contributed their money, effort, and/or time, we couldn’t have done it without you. You played a hand in this story and for that we are grateful. Please enjoy the behind-the-scenes slideshow courtesy of our BTS photographer, Courtney Beauchamp.

Exposed Playlist.

With the Exposed Playlist, side A, we wanted to focus on the outward appearance that the world including Marcus’ friends Chelsea and Brandon see, know, and love, but also focus on how he interacts with the world around him.

“Reprising Marcus Carter means so much to do and share with an audience. The story is just something-- I feel has not truly been explored.” ~Shakeem Cota

With production right around the corner for IV Vision's seventh project, Exposed: The Series, it only felt right to not only see the vision when creating this piece but also envision how it would sound. While writing and preparing this project, I kept track of what music I took in and how it influenced the mood/tone of the setting/local, conflict, characters, and their story arcs. Bringing it to the attention of my fellow producers made us decide to share multiple character-based playlists we will curate weekly, leading into the project's production. We hope you capture a glimpse of the sounds and elements that embody the characters of the Exposure world and get a taste of what you could hear within the project's soundtrack.

~Jewel IV, Creator/Director of Exposed: The Series

Marcus’ Exposed Playlist

It was no question that Marcus Carter's title for his playlist would be the "exposed" playlist. Following his conflicting situation from the first Exposure film with the trilogy, Exposure (2020), we see Marcus (played by Shakeem Cota) endure the early stages of his guilt after submitting provocative images of his lover Levi to a photography competition. Writer/director Jewel IV curated this playlist from songs within his music library that he associates with Marcus' overall character, outward demeanor, actions/choices, and inner thoughts that he channels through Exposed: The Series. "Unlike the rest of the character-based playlists, I couldn't fully grasp a genre to categorize Marcus solely. He is multifaceted, and I think the music choice embodies that direction." - Jewel IV. Formulated by the creator of Marcus's world, this playlist features a range of artistry, from chart toppers such Beyoncé, Future, SZA, and Frank Ocean; to more rising artists such as Jean Deaux, Erika de Casier, Joi Najae, and many more.

Action!!!

It’s the first day of principal photography so what better way to hear from the director on Exposed: The Series.

I sat down with the CEO of IV Vision and director, Jewel Hamrick IV, to discuss his seventh project, Exposed: The Series, and explore how this project completes the World of Exposure and his plans for the future.

Q: What inspiration did you use to write this story? Music, shows, art (paintings/pictures/music)

A: With the world/story being built over a span of multiple years, a lot of things have inspired me. With Exposure (the first film in the trilogy) I was highly influenced by Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange and BLONDE projects, also his 2015 Oyster Magazine photoshoot. That sparked the idea of making Marcus Carter a photographer. For ZIR (the second film in the trilogy), I was inspired by my own personal struggles with my father, Jewel Hamrick III, and how they have shaped who I am today. Exposed’s influence is layered from the previous films, my evolving relationships with my friends, parents, and society as a whole being an openly black gay male. The first episode stems from influences from Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black, which I highly resonated with while structuring and writing the pilot episode.

Q: What drew you to this story?

A: The immense lack of openly gay black protagonists on linear and OTT platforms with the “diversity and inclusion song” playing in the background. It saw a need.

Q: Did you put yourself in any of the characters or identify with them?

A: All of the characters that have been built within this proof or overall series concept have stemmed from personal experiences from my life, such as relationships, actions, dialogue, etc.

Q: Where do you hope this story goes?

A: I know the story will go far with the previous establishment. I hope it resonates with fellow members, and non-members of the black LGBTQ community primarily.

Q: What do you hope ppl get from this story?

A: At least one of the 4 instilled themes, exposure, self-discovery, family, and acceptance.

Q: Which character would you say you are most like and why?

A: Marcus Carter for sure. Besides the fact that he is 50% me, I think what really connects us is the fact that we have gone through the dating process in the Lowcountry as gay men, which is a whole lot of trial and error.

Q: What was the most challenging and most rewarding part of Exposed?

A: The most challenging part has been financing if we are going to be completely honest. As much as we are in the time of supporting black stories, it does, unfortunately, come with a cap. The most rewarding part of Exposed, personally, is the fact that it is the last piece to this impromptu trilogy that has developed over the span of 3 years.

Q: Favorite line or scene from the script?

A: “It’s giving Try Again, no Aaliyah.” | Brandon

Q: Are there any hidden messages/gems in the world that you hope people will recognize? If so, what? Do you dare share?!

A: With this project being the final piece to this “pitch puzzle” that I like to call it, I made sure that the audience would get as many answers to plotted questions and situations that the writers and I pay off as much as we can, without straight handing it to them. The visual structure matches the script, and the script … is DETAILED. The most detailed script I have written to date. Pay attention to characters and what they want, and how they go about getting what they want.

Disclosed Playlist.

With Levi’s Disclosed Playlist, side A, we wanted to focus on the outward appearance that the world including Levi’s family Shazir, Von, and his love interest Alicia, and you our viewers see. The side he shows the world.

With production right around the corner for IV Vision's seventh project, Exposed: The Series, it only felt right to not only see the vision when creating this piece but also envision how it will sound.

Levi’s Disclosed Playlist

“Disclosed” seems to be the word that best describes Levi Sutton (played by Khalil Harmon). Although he is an ATL native his roots are in Savannah. The audience first gets a glimpse of him in Exposure as he plays Marcus’ down-low lover. He and his brother shazir Sutton are the heirs to their uncle’s underground drug operation. Thought the series Levi juggles his double life with his developing relationship with Marcus while trying to keep his public relationship with Alicia hidden. He establishes a closer connection with Shazir, helping him with the hardest decision he has to make, which is killing Von. Formulated from the latest hits in Hip-Hop and Trap beats, this playlist features artists that showcase Lev’s outward appearance. The playlist features artists such as Q From the Block, Travis Scott, Tyler the Creator, Don Toliver, Drake, and Future.
